Hi all,

Gonna be spending about 9-10 weeks in Debre Birhan completing an internship. Just wondering if there were any expats in Debre Birhan or if there any suggestions on things to do/places to go?

Thanks

If you are going soon ie June to Sept take good waterproofs and track suit tops, cold and wet.

  1. Weekend at Ankober Palace Lodge 42 km away.
  2. Guassa Community C Area. See Bradt Guide 6th edition p 363.
  3. Bus to Addis for some weekends.

Get Bradt Guide to Ethiopia 6th edition, IF going after September WAIT for new 7th edition due out that month.

Wow thanks! I'm actually already in Debre Birhan and will be in the country until the end of august, when my contract ends. But I'm definitely interested in the Ankober Palace Lodge for the weekend, and will probably spend some time with another expat in Addis during my stay here.

What are your suggestions to see Simien Mountains, and maybe Lalibela or Gondar? I hear a plane from Addis would be fastest?

Thanks again for all your help!

Don’t forget to take a winter cape, it could be terribly cold and windy sometimes. No flight service in Debre Birhan. If you want to fly to north you have to take the flight from Addis Ababa. I suggest you to try to reach Lalibela and Bahir Da from Bahir Dar with bus. One colleague told me that he drived with private Landcruiser over new road which goes to Lalibela and Bahir Dar through Alem ketema without reaching Dessie. He was so impressed about the topography and the landscape during his journey. Check if there is already a bus service or connection to reach Lalibela or Bahir Dar this way. Avoid the conventional rout und try this one for more pleasure and adventure.
