Awassa and the lakes in the area can be an option too.
You can reach it by the road to Butajira where you have some nice spots on the way and connect the road to Shashemene via Ziway.

Thanks Michel, but we have now changed our itinerary, thanks to the advice on here. We were to fly from Lalibela to Addis on the 27th, then get the bus to Harar the following day and then fly back two days later. We have now changed our flights, so we will be flying from Lalibela to Dire Dawa on the 27th, so we now have three days in Harar.

Thanks for all your help!

The buses to Harar leave from the main bus station in Addis? And it's best to book a day before? Online, at your hotel, or at the station?

Selam and Sky are leaving from Meskal Square.
It's important to book the day before specially if you want to book with Selam but by security, do it also for Sky.

It's possible to use a " local bus" from Autobus Terra if you want to stop on the way because, from Autobus Terra, the main bus station in Addis, you don't have a direct one to Harar but a lot of connection with the places on the way.
It's a question of choice and timing.

It's possible to leave a Sky or Selam bus before the arrival but it will be impossible to catch one on the way.
