Hi guys,

i have some questions and hope sb can help me:

  • how long does it take to get from Addis Abeba to Lalibela by bus? can 1 make it in 1 day? (i would prefer to travel by day). how much is the bus? is the road beautiful? is hitchhiking also possible on this road or generell in Ethiopia? are there some cars driving or only trucks?
  • how long does it take to get from Lalibela to the border of Sudan? can i make it in 1 day?
  • how much is a visa for Ethiopia at the embassy in Djibouti? i´ve heard it is not possible to get one at the land border from somalialand to ethiopia
  • how much is the VOA at Bole airport (in ADD). i´ve heard at the embassy and the airport it was always 20 dollars. but im wondering if this is still correct.
  • i´ve also heard that it was always possible to get it at the embassy in hargeisa in somalialand, but now it´s not possible anymore. is this correct??? this would be my solution to get it there. or even better on the border

i need advices from travelers who have recently there and can please give me correct information.
it would help me a lot.
thanks guys in advance!!!

Lalibela is not on any main transportation through-route, so I think the expectations of getting there and back that fast are unrealistic.

  1. Not 1 day. 2 days, overnighting in Dessie.
  2. You mean Metema? I can't imagine you could get there in 1 day from Lalibela via Gondor.
  3. VOA on arrival at Bole just went up to US$50.

You can reach Lalibela from Addis in less than one day by plane...
By bus, it will be two days. Not really two full days but it will be an overnight trip.
If you use public transports, the price will be cheap.
The North of Ethiopia is beautiful. You will enjoy your trip.
Hitchhiking is possible with trucks. It's not for free but it's better to avoid "Al Qaeda" (Isuzu trucks)
The VOA at Bole is 50$.
There is no embassy at Hargeisa but only a Liaison Office.
