Travelling by bus in Ethiopia is getting easyer. Since a few months there are two bus companies with confortable buses and leaving fromtheir own bus stop. That avoid getting up at 4 AM in order to be on time at the overcrowded Merkato bus station.
The confortable bus are more expensive than ordinary ones.
SELAM BUS has the Addis Abeba booking office in Meskal Square, right next to the Tourist information Office, inside a small courtyard. Buses leave at 6 AM from Selam Bus Station next to La Gare (Train Station) and travellers are request to be there at 5.30 AM.
SELAM BUS travels daily to BAHAR DAR and GONDAR, DESSIE and MEKELE, HARRAR, DIRE DAWA and AWASA and prices are about twice ordinary bus.
The other new company is SKY BUS, even more confortable, maybe air condition (looking from outside: I did not experienced it myself) but prices are about three times ordinary buses.
But I.m sorry I dont have more infos about. Maybe some other traveller can complete the infos about SKY BUS.

I checked out SELAM BUS on their station close to Train Station last Tuesday. They charge 130 Birr to Bahir Dar, and I could buy a ticket on the station for the next day. However, I am still in Addis Ababa, but may buy a ticket from SELAM in a day or two. The alternative for me would be a minibus with pick up at my hotel (booked through the hotel), 200 Birr was quoted and with pick up at 04 am. - Minibuses generally tend to have less leg room than a large bus, so I will probably go for SELAM. As far as I could see on the station, SELAM buses have 2 by 2 seats along the aisle, which should make it fairly spaceous.
