What is the best (easiest) route by land from Addis Ababa to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia?

I am guessing there is a boat from Djibouti onwards to Jeddah (but that IS a guess).

Thanks in advance for responses

There are ferries from Sudan and Egypt too. Unless you have a bona fide reason for going (job, resident, etc) you won't get a visa.

Hi Dave,

It's for a flight out from Jeddah, so i assume a transit visa would cover it (for Dijbouti and Saudi)?

I'd check with a Saudi embassy first. They are very reluctant to give any visas.

Pirates are pretty active in that area and have been eluding foreign navies. For your information.

You may try and get a dhow from Djibouti to Yemen (Aden or Mokha). About 2 years ago, people on the Middle East forum mentioned they were able to get transit visas at the Saudi embassy in San'a in order to get to Jordan. But you have to consider the following:
a) Boats from Djibouti to anywhere are pretty infrequent and also sometimes dangerous.
b) It's indeed very, very difficult to get a visa to KSA even if you have a flight out of Jiddah.
c) The north of Yemen is also dangerous (around Za'da), although the coastal road should be ok.
d) Not possible to cross overland from Ethiopia or Djibouti to Eritrea.

So the best and safest option would be to fly to Jiddah.

I heard recently that the Consulate in Port Sudan is one of the best places to try for a Saudi transit visa, if you have a good reason (eg a flight out of Jeddah), there are ferries from port Sudan to Jeddah.
Of course this would neccesitate getting a sudanese visa, which can be time consuming and expensive.
