Hey,
For train times and info, the touregypt website is great - everything you need. You can buy train tickets to anywhere from anywhere in any major train station as far as I know, and definatly return tickets aren't a problem. In Cairo, you can only independently buy train tickets from the main train station. A ride to Luxor from Cairo will cost you about 80 L.E. ( 12-15$) and its perfectly fine, think soft airplane seats. Of course, it all epends if there is a sick, screaming baby next to you, but thats just luck! Its just very cold, any time of year, as air con is on all the time, so bring something warm. :)

I find the most reliable train site for times and fares to be www.seat61.com/egypt (has lots of other countries on it too, if you're interested).

I would seriously suggest looking into flying. It is often cheaper than the (sleeper) train, and even if it's a few $$ more, you can save a day. I flew from Cairo-->Luxor-->Sharm El Sheik, and saved $$ on one leg and about 13 hours on the other.
Don't buy any tickets (train or plane) in advance. Go to the Egyptair office in Alexandria or whatever city you're in - they have several in every city. The prices at the office were much cheaper than some online sites. If not, buy the train tickets.

No.4 thanks for the idea...will do tht exactly...i did check up the website of egypt air n it was def $$$ cheaper than the sleeper train...guess will go there n c ..
Was the flight cheaper than the train once you add the cost of taxis to and from the airports and an extra hotel night? Probably not!
Plus you miss out on the overland Egyptian travel experience by flying.
And flying actually takes more time, as it uses up 4-5 hours of useful daytime time what with all the airports and planes and check-ins and taxis when you could have gone by overnight train, leaving in the evening and arriving next morning and so taking up virtually no daytime time at all.
Oh yes, and there's global warming to worry about now, with the need to avoid all unnecessary flights...
