I have been thinking about my upcoming July 20 to September 20 vacation and I'm considering Egypt. I know it is hot during this time, but I'm from Southern California and the heat, especially dry heat, doesn't bother me. Is there much backpack/guesthouse traveling? Because I travel cheaply and alone and I'd rather be with other backpackers, is there a backpacking/ guesthouse circuit type scene there? I really want to go snorkeling in the Red Sea. Will it be expensive and crowded during this time? I was also thinking of Iran and Turkey. Any ideas, information, or suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

You say you're "from southern California" - I take this to mean you're an American citizen? If so I'm not sure what the chances of your getting an Iranian visa are - maybe look at FAQs or search on the Middle East branch for more info?

Regarding Egypt, there are plenty of backpackers, especially on the Red Sea coast around Sinai.
I just posted the following on another recent post - while not strictly answering your question I think it may be of interest.

You don't have time to get a visa for Iran' besides which you'd need to go with a tour group or tour guide - and very little chance of snorkling there.

What are your interests, apart from snorkling? Egypt or Turkey both seem a long way to go just for that.

Both are great places to visit.
Egypt will be cheaper [except maybe for Sharm el Sheikh],
The Turkish coastline will be full of tourists in most spots, but a month would enable you to see quite a lot of the country - or maybe walk the Lycian way.
