This is quite bizarre - but every email I've sent today to a Siwa hotel has been returned! Anyone have updated contact info or a way to book at:

Talaa Ranch Hotel
Taziry Hotel

Or other recomendations?

Also - how long would you ideally stay in Siwa if you wanted to take things slow enough and experience the place - as well as maybe get into the desert a bit on an excursion?

I wouldnt worry about booking in Siwa. There are many hotels of different qualities.
You need at least 3 days if you can spare it to absorb the atmosphere. There isnt to much to see really. Its just one of those places that is so different from anywhere else.
I stayed 7 days and i was looking for things to do. Not a bad place to be becalmed in though.
Cheers.

If you want to book in advance, just call them by phone. Internet adresses are generally printed to look good, not to be used.

Three days seems good to me as well. You can visit the old city, rent a bike and drive around the lakes and to the beautiful temple of Amon where Alexander the Great is supposed to have gone, relax on a small island over the dried lake where you can bathe in a hot spring and sleep in a hamac, and have a drive in the desert with sand dunes, hot springs and an amazing lake embedded in the midst of sand dunes.

Sleeping in the desert is extremely nice as well. You can arrange the trip once in Siwa but be sure to tell the guys want you want and don't want. Some won't hesitate to put you in the car with tourists you have never met, or they will have you sleep in the desert... ten minutes by foot from the road, which is unacceptable.

I spent 3 days in Siwa as well and found that about the right amount of time. Maybe would have liked to stay one more night or have driven to see the White Desert. Either way, it's a fantastic opportunity and shouldn't be missed. The people there are even more gracious than Egyptians (which is saying a lot!)
