Shepheard Hotel or other in area

Hi-

am going to egypt to celebrate my birthday this year and am thinking about splurging a few days around the day (not that its a big birthday - but we're all entitled to a little luxury here and there, i guess).

at any rate, i am thinking about staying at the Shepheard Hotel.

Has anyone any experience with this hotel. Is it a good hotel? based on their website it looks like a pretty good hotel, but am wondering about first hand experiences.

Can you recommend any other hotels in this area other than the Shepheard Hotel which are also nice.
