Hi everyone,

We have a return flight from Cairo back to the States at 5:15a. There is an Aswan flight that departs the night before at 11:55p, arriving in Cairo around 1am. So it works out that we can just stay at the airport until check-in at Lufthansa.

But I've read that sometimes Egyptair cancel flights when there aren't enough people on the plane. Well, I read this regarding Abu Simbel, so the same may not apply to Aswan. What I read is that they Egyptair just puts the canceled passengers on the next flight. That wouldn't work for us, b/c the next Aswan-Cairo flight doesn't arrive until 7:30a. Has this happened to anyone? I guess we could just take an earlier afternoon/evening flight and wait at the airport (it doesn't make sense to us to get a room we'd have to leave at 2a). This way, if the earlier flight gets canceled, then we hopefully have some options to get back to Cairo in time for our 3a check-in/5:15a departure. Am I overly concerned?

If we do end up getting into Cairo earlier (airport at 8p) does anyone have any suggestions as to what to do until our check-in? Or should we not bother and just wait at the airport?

Thanks all!

Except if both flights are run by Egypt Air, I'd not take the risk of having such a short connection time. Egypt air local flight may be late, postponed, cancelled... you never know.
You had better take the plane that arrives ar 8pm and go to Cairo to have a nice dinner. The Heliopolis neighborhood is very close to the airport, and even Dowtown is not that far, you can have a nice meal in one of Zamalek's posh restaurants for instance (don't forget to book by phone the day before) or go and have dinner and chicha in the Khan al Khalili for instance.
Driving from the airport to Dowtown takes less than 30 minutes at night as there is no traffic jam, so you don't have to worry about missing your plane. Heliopolis is only a 5-10 mn drive from the airport.

Thanks to you both. I'll heed catw's advice and take the earlier flight. Thanks for the Heliopolis recommendation! Fayray
