Hi thorns
I am hoping for a little advice. My mum and I have just booked a last minute trip for a nile crusie ( we leave monday)I have been searching for tips and things to do, to not to, to not miss, important things to bring, health....etc but I was wondering if anyone has been who could offer me some first hand advice? I have done quite a lot of travelling and this has always been a great source of help for me. I have never really either done an organised tour - we have a set itineray, with a few optional extras. I really want to get the most out of it.
Thank you very much, it really is appreciated
Jer

Hi Jer,
I have put a list of travel tips together for people coming to Egypt....covers many questions asked on TT on the subject.
Have a wonderful cruise....everyone should treat themselves to one on the Nile at least once in their life....I would love to have been able to treat my mum to one!

Hi Jer,

My girlfriend and I just finished with a Nile Cruise about a month ago. Depending on which way you are heading, I would recommend the temples of Edfu and Kom Umbo (hope I spelled them right) The food on the cruise was great but as it was the end of July it was HOT ! ! We spent most of the day either seeing the two sites or up on the dock by the pool watching the scenery, which in our opinion was something NOT to miss.

We had our own personel guide which was awesome, we were able to take our time and were not rushed through the temples.

Luxor - Lot to do there, valley of the kings was great, but you can only choose 3 tombs, valley of the Queens (we missed, wish we would have went)

In terms of things to bring, like health wise... The pharmcy's have everything you need so I would not recommend bringing anything that you are not going to use. It is just added weight.

You should go to Abu Simbel if you have a chance out of Aswan. It is a long day but should NOT be missed.

Send me us an emial and we can assist you with anything we can. We were there for 3 weeks.

Good Luck
Susan and Brian

Well, take some Immodium in case you do get travellers diarrhoea. Drinking the local water is not a good idea, so you'll have to buy the bottled stuff, but be wary of buying this from the touts, as they may have simply refilled bottles.

The last post pretty much covered the sights - the boat will stop at some good places on the way...but if you can, take some time to explore Cairo, as the pyramids at Giza and Sakkara are on the outskirts and you might not therefore see them from the boat.

Enjoy the cruise, I'm sure you'll love it! And don't forget to buy a galebiya, as these cruises will often have a 'galebiya night.'

What exactly is a galabeya night? Does it involve dancing?

Yes it does!! And a fair few of the local guys are damn good belly dancers - they can do some things with their hips on the dance floor that you would not think was humanly possible. I got danced off the dance floor, which serves me right for getting too cocky. The galabiya night is where you wear a galebiya (the traditional robe) - it's a party night on the boat.

Epimethea - that sounds great!
One of the reasons I am going to Egypt is to study music & dancing, so I will definitely look forward to galabeya night!

I recently heard that there is an amazing male dancer in Sharm El Sheik and since he came on the scene, everyone has been requesting male bellydancers instead of women and he has been training a lot of other men to dance like him. His name is Tito. I doubt I'll get to S-E-S on my trip but I'm hoping to see some other great dancers in Cairo - hopefully Dina if I can find out where she performs.

Well, I would certainly like to know more about the local dance scene! I got to see the monuments but I did not get to go 'clubbing' and I only got to see one bellydancer. I like the dancing and music and I am a passable dancer myself (though not up to the standard of a Dina, regrettably), so I hope next time to see some really good dancing. How do I found out more about that scene??

E,

there are some articles on the Gilded Serpent by Leila of Cairo. Actually I think she put together an entire listing of where to see dancers in Cairo.
