Hi people, I am planning a trip to Egypt in February 2008. is this a good time of year to go? I dont like the heat so much and thought it would be cooler then, also not so many crowds. Also is it easy to access ATMs in Cairo and is it ok for a single woman to travel around or would it be safer to go with a group?

Coolest time is December/January but December is very popular with tourists especially Xmas week. ATMS at all banks all over Egypt and in 5 star hotels. It is quite safe to travel alone.....as long as you are not easily led! You will get constant offers of help to be taken everywhere.....just maybe not always directly because everyone wants to take you to their friends etc. to buy things. Just be firm about where you want to go.

I traveled independently to Egypt with my mom, who was 60 at the time, and she had the time of her life. We got around fine in trains, planes, taxis, etc., traveling from Cairo to Luxor and back. Egyptians are very welcoming and respectful of older people; it is also an exceptionally safe country.
