Hi there,

I read that foreigners aren't allowed to go from Marsa Alam to Luxor by public bus and instead have to go a long way round via Hurghada or have to go in a convoy or something.

1) Is that still current?
2) Is that more like a 'supposed' to or will it be impossible to get on a public bus? I very definitely can't pass for an Egyptian.
3) What's the best way to get from Marsa Alam to Luxor airport? How does that convoy work if it still exists?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

We travelled from Hamata to Marsa Alam to Edfu by long-distance bus (left Hamata at midnight), arrived in Edfu around 5am. From Edfu we took a taxi to Luxor. There were around 3 check points along the way where we had to present travel documents; we didn't have to travel in any convoy. The bus, btw, went on to Aswan. This was over two years ago, but the same convoy information was on all the websites we checked.

Hello, the convoys has been canceled between any town on the Red Sea and Luxor or Aswan since more then two years ago and instead the government made a new role , is to get a permits for travel from the tourist office witch the driver makes it with a photo copy of your passports .
To travel to Luxor from Hamata or marsa alam best would be to get a taxi or limousine taxi witch is a standard modern salon car witch has to be licensed for tourists and the price from Hamata to Luxor airport would be around 100 to 120€ but from marsa alam town to Luxor is about 80€ and the most reliable taxis that I know of is Stevens taxis on www.marsaalam.com there the cheapest and most reliable and the road is safe for tourists and you would need to go on the road from marsa alam to Edfu 220 km then from Edfu to Luxor witch is 100 km and the journey would take from marsa alam to Luxor about 4 hours and add one hour if your starting for. Hamata .

You can contact Steven taxis on steven@marsaalam.com and they replay within a few hours and I wish you very nice holiday in Egypt
