was planning to spend the second half of September in the luxor area, flying out of morocco. it seems that sharm is probably okay, but what about luxor and the area around there--how affected is it by what is going on in cairo and other places? and if we don't fly into cairo from morocco, what's the next best airpost to fly into? thanks for any help on this!!
i think that you should wait and see what happens in the next weeks. hopefully for the egyptians, the demonstrations and unrests, and especially the violence on both sides, will stop soon.
right now, the swiss and german governements (and probably plenty of others) advice against all travels to egypt (including luxour) with the exception of the red resorts (sharm, hurghada, marsa alam etc.). but untill september, a lot can change.
coming from morocco, you will have to fly via cairo, but that is not a problem.
thanks for the information Natalie.... although i'm thinking now, after reading several posts on this topic, that even in September, it would be an insensitive thing to go there as a "tourist" amidst all the death and sorrow that's going on now...
i know what you mean. but on the other hand (and assuming of course that in september the situation is much better than today), tourism is very important to egypt, and people working in tourism (which in places like sharm and luxor are a lot) have been suffering from low/lower numbers of visitors since the revolution one year ago. so once its peaceful again, every tourist who travels to egypt will be "needed" / welcome.
I appreciate very much your comments, and rest assured, should things become peaceful in September, I will be sure to be in Egypt...I have some flexibility in my schedule and am not flying into or out of Egypt for my main flight.

Hi my friend.
Nathalie gave you a caucious advice and I agree with her.
Your reaction is also reasonable.
As for flights from morocco as far as I know there is just one direct flight from Casablanca to Cairo (royal air maroc and egyptair)
If i were to fly ONE WAY I would buy a through ticket to some other place to start because egyptair gives a big bargain so you could fly to Sharm or Aswan with 270 euros one way.
Again your reaction to the egyptian reality is very reasonable and you are well to not make any plans immediately.
All the best, Anas

I hope everything is going to be fine in September. i I would like to come back in October. I love this
country and I love its people. I would like to help anyone who can travel to Egypt because I have been
for two weeks there at the beginning in June. I would like to cope with travellers.
thank you for all that helpful input and information... and as difficult as things seem to be getting, we have not yet foreclosed the possibility of going to the luxor area...I've heard there have been some flight cancellations to luxor from Britain, but can't tell if that's a trend or not....any one on the ground there have any recent updates, or anyone who has traveled today, july 10th to or from luxor?
have been reading from several newspapers online, including al jezeera, ahram and the Egyptian guardian, and I have not seen any more reports of clashes in luxor. from those of you on the ground there, can you give an update on how things have been in luxor for the last couple of days?

A few years back I stayed at the welcoming www.flatsinluxor.co.uk pension on the west bank, which is run by Jane from the UK. She blogs about tourism in Luxor at http://luxor-news.blogspot.de and may be the best person to ask.
It seems the tourism sector is really taking a battering, even though there's nothing to fear in Luxor: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jul/10/egypt-power-vacuum-tourism-industry-disintegrating
