I'm schedule to fly to Cairo from LAX next week and really am on the fence about going. Obviously, I'm well aware of the situation in the country and have been monitoring things very closely. Is there anyone on the forum currently in Cairo that can speak to the mood and safety of things outside of Tahir Square? My backup plan is to travel to Turkey and Greece, spending a week in each.

Hi my friend!
Was there a pressing need to visit Egypt during the Scorching month of Ramadan?
If so go to egypt abstain from walking around the towncentre of Cairo and Alexandria keep a low profile, dress conservantly and chances are you will come back to your country in one piece.
But is that the case? Of a pressing need to go there? And miss the essence of the country as islamic and christian Cairo are within the highlights of Egypt but now less enjoyable than in a normal period?
And really even if one has a pleasant stay in Egypt nowdays how the mood can be "I am a traveller and so not concerned about the 50 people shot dead yesterday"??
So IF you can change plans give Egypt a miss at the moment and spend your two weeks in Turkey and Greece.
Once again, regardless of the mounting political unrest in the country the scorching month of ramadan was not a good choice to visit Egypt even at the first place.
I have to tell you that i am not currently in Cairo but I know well the place as I had been there at more than 15 travels a couple of them was AFTER the toppling of Mubarak regime.
Happy travels any place you decide to go.
