Guys! Need your advice please!

I´m planning a trip to Egypt next April with 6 friends and want to make a daytrip overland to Petra from Cairo.

We´ve seen companies selling packages to Petra going overland and taking a ferry to get to Jordan. Have any of you done that?

Any reccomendations? Travel agency? Prices? Is it worth going for the day?

I´ll appreciate any info!!
Thank you!

I would recommend allowing a lot more than 1 day. I did a day trip from Taba, and ended up only being there for about 2 hours. And from Cairo it's further away. I really regret doing a day trip and wish I had had more time, or saved it for another trip.

I doubt you will be able to do a day trip from Cairo. Even if a company offers it, you shouldn't consider it, waste of time and money.

You cannot daytrip from cairo to Petra.
It is a different thing to daytrip from a place near Nuweiba but be aware that the travel time by bus from cairo to Nuweiba is seven hours or even more. You must count another six hours for the transport between Nuweiba and Petra including customs, boat travel, again customs, and transport from Aqaba to Petra.
So Cairo to Petra and Back is more than 24 hous just one way.

I can confirm the above post. Having made that journey in our own car I would say you need to allow a minimum of 12 hours from Cairo to Petra. And that's if the ferry leaves on time - ours was delayed three hours.

Also bear in mind that if you don't have a hotel booking in Jordan then the entrance fee for Petra is JD90 (as opposed to JD60 for a three day pass).

Finally it is a real waste to visit for an hour or two. It is a huge site. It takes 40 minutes just to walk from the gate to the Siq entrance.

We spent 10-12 hours a day for three days exploring and still didn't see everything.

In summary you will spend a lot of time and money and get little back for it. Save it for a trip when you can do it justice

You may want to check a map before posting on the forum. It mat help you realize that a one-day trip to Petra from Cairo is impossible.

Thanks to all the replies!
Yea i was a bit doubtfull about that itinerary...
It seems we must fly there so we can get a full day visit.
I'll keep working it!
Thank you all!

You can't fly to Petra, the airport is near Amman. You will need to take a taxi and drives several hours to reach the site. There's no way you can visit if you don't spend at least two nights there.
