The Australian government has posted a "Reconsider your need to travel" to Egypt warning on their travel advisory website, which greatly concerns me...

This follows news (on 25 June 2007) that a man described as a leader of al-Qaeda's wing in Egypt has called for attacks on Israeli and Western targets in Egypt in support of the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas.

Have threats like this happened recently before?

Obviously I am concerned as we are due to be travelling to Egypt soon...

Egypt is probably the safest place in Africa. Tourism is one of Egypts main foreign exchange earners so the tourist police will have to keep awake for awhile.
Most western governments are ultra cautious and it is usually an arse covering exercise.
You will be safe, Don't worry!
Cheers.

Take Oz DFAT warnings with a grain of salt- I travel every year to places with Oz travel warnings................

Oz DFAT warnings are the only ones that make US State Department warnings sound reasonable.

Remember a couple of years ago when they said that no-one should go to Turkey

In general, it should be safe. If you're traveling independently, it should be really safe. Most terrorist attacks on tourists in Egypt have targeted large tour groups -- tour buses in front of the Cairo Museum or the Hatshepsut Temple -- because they provide maximum visibilty for 'the cause'. Even those attacks are rare. Attacks on individual travelers, for terrorist purposes, are practically unheard of. But I might leave your American flag t-shirt at home, just to be on the safe side.

DFAT isn't completely DAFT, but nearly.
