I was in Cairo at the end of December and received some mis information about visiting the antiquities museum in Cairo. As we approached the front entrance a security guard told us that since the civil unrest the museum was closed to non group tours until 1pm. Also that we would have to go in via the entrance on the opposite side of the building. While we were taking some photos another two other passers by separately told us the same - one even walking with us to the other entrance. This was shut and clearly not an access point for anyone but what was strange was that none of the people giving the duff info tried to sell us anything or ask for money - all seemed to be quite genuine in trying to be helpful.

Of course everyone has enter via the main entrance and there is no restriction on individuals entering at any time.

Similarly, when we were there a few months ago, we got ready to go in the main museum entrance and someone told us to go around to the side. It was closed and we walked back to the main door. Like your case, they didn’t try to sell us anything. Odd.
