Hello TT Folks,
My wife, 2 kids & I will be stopping over in Cairo for 5 hours (Landing at 11.50 am and departing for London at 16:55). Given that none of us have been to Egypt before...Is it feasible to leave the airport and do something worthwhile/ memorable?

If not what are my options while on the airport premises?

Many Thanks in advance for all your suggestions!

MR G

No u won't have time. Even if u arrive on a Fri or Saturday when traffic would be OK u would be in a rush and stressed. I would not recommend it. Save egypt for another time. :)

Thanks for the quick response! Are there any airport lounges or comfortable places where we can pass ghe time?

i totally agree with #1, not enough time.

cairo airport is not very busy and not very "exciting" either - the choice of restaurants, shops etc. is quite limited (you cant compare it at all to places like heathrow, suvarnabhumi (bangkok), klia (kuala lumpur), o.r. tambo (johannesburg) etc. on the good side - there is plenty of seating. i see that there a couple of lounges in the airport on www.cairo-airport.com/services_lounges.asp but i havent been to them (and i dont know how much it costs to get into them etc.).

you need a visa to go out of the airport and the visa can now only be got from a Egypt Embassy overseas.
There is no more visa on arrival.

In response to #4

Visa upon arrival is still possible. The plans to implement that new rule from May 2015 have been abandoned. You still need to check if your nationality needs to appply for a visa beforehand though.
