If you get no response here, perhaps you could contact Ngepi Camp . They have conducted tours to Tsodo and might advise you.

I did the Hills last year, road to the entrance gate was pretty beat up, a mix of tarmac and hard dirt. Once at the gate is was all dirt track to the base of the hills, probably about a 10 min drive don’t remember it being tricky although I was in my landrover. I suppose you can easily get to the main gate in a 2wd, then give it a try, if it looks to bad then just walk the rest. (If it has rained though forget it in a 2wd)

Hi

I went in mid-2008 in a v small 2WD. No dramas at all. Has the road deteriorated?

Please keep me posted if you hear anything as I'll possibly be back there in about 3 weeks. I'll report back if I do go.

You won't get stuck in a 2wd as it not deep sand or anything like that, its all hard dirt, like I said get to the main gate them see what the road is like, if you decide to leave the 2wd at the gate you can alwasy get a lift into the museum\camp at the base of the hills, from there you can pick up a guide and walk around the hills I did a big loop and it didn't take more than a couple of hours on foot

Hi

Just to let you know that I didn't drive that road in the end. But seems like everyone says it's still OK for a 2WD. Enjoy!

Hi there.

Okay, so we went to the hills last week and this is what i can report.

Our small 2x4 vw got us in to tsodillo village without any trouble. Though the road was sandy and bumpy and I think a car with higher clearance would have been better. The speed averaged 40km/hr due to the rd. it's about 40km off the made main road and well sign posted. The rain season has just began and there were some large puddles/pools on the road which were easy enough to negotiate. Perhaps come jan/feb, this maybe more tricky in a 2x4.

HOWEVER, once you are in tsodilo Village, the gateway to the park is a bit hard to find. We went passed it and had to come back to the village and ask some ladies where it was. Coming from the main rd, it's about half a km off to the right just before the village. Large green entrance. At the gate was a guy who sold us some firewood for camping, let us in and then swiftly disappeared. Once in, the road to the museum and camping area was so incredibly muddy and rutted that it was impossible for us. The mud was really sticky and clung tight to our feeble avis rental, making a mockery of it and us. We tried several tracks but all were impassable. It was so infuriating. We were hoping to camp the night in there and it was late in the day.

In the end we left and drove all the way back out again without even seeing the hills close up. Really pissed off as I had called the tsodilo hills museum and asked if it was okay to drive in.

My guess is that we were just 2 or 3 kms short. So annoying. We couldn't believe that they couldn't have graded the final short section on the inside of the park.
