Hi,
We're travelling next year from Kasane via Ihaha and Savuti to Maun through Chobe NP.

We're looking for a reliabele 4x4, but we're wondering if we need sand ladders and a winch? A lot of companies renting 4x4's don't deliver sand ladders and a winch.

Thanks for your comment.

Kind regards
Gunther

If you are deflating your tyres you shouldn't have any problems. If you were to get stuck the chances are pretty good of another vehicle passing by eventually.
I did it with neither a winch nor sand ladder. We were a solo vehicle for a lot of it.
The deepest sand I came across was between Savute and Chobe (as well as a couple of young bull elephants laying down on the track) and managed that fine.
It's a fantastic journey, I wish you all the best.

If you rent a land rover or land cruiser, you shouldn't need sand ladders. If you rent something like a hilux, there is that chance of getting stuck, but most likely due to clearance. Try to rent a diesel for the low end torque and fuel economy. With long range tanks, you shouldn't need to carry jerry cans that is often needed with petrol engines on that route, unless you expect to do extensive game drives daily.
