Hi all!

This year i’m very confused about where to go for our 4 weeks holiday and i’m really considerino to do for the first time (ops! Second, our first was in South Africa, but I don’t know why, it’s hard to consider this country really Africa!) in our travels an overland journey in Africa from Johannesburg to Dar Es Salam travelling through Botswana, Zambia, Malati and finally Tanzania. Our travel will be from the first week of Feb, come back early March (we don't have fligh ticket until now).

I’ll travel with my husband (I’m 35 he is 42 y.o), we are well experienced in backpackers travel, not extreme hard but basic travel but since 7 years we travelled only the South East Asia and Indian Subcontinent….and we know that travel in that part of the world is easier than in Africa.

Anyway we want to have some suggestion for our (rough) itinerary that sounds so:

Day 1: leave from Italy
Day 2 : arrive in Jo’burg and maybe go to Gaborone by bus
Day 3: Gaborone – Maun by bus
Day 4: Maun and the Okawango Delta
Day 5: the same
Day 6: Maun to Kasane by bus
Day 7: Kasane (Chobe N.P.)
Day 8: Kasane and bus to Livingstone
Day 9: Linvingstone
Day 10: Livingstone to Lusaka by bus
Day 11: Lusaka – Chipata by bus
Day 12: Chipata to Sout Luangwa N.P. by bus
Day 13 South Luangwa N.P. – Lilongwe
Day 14 Lilongwe – Senga Bay
Day 15 Senga Bay – Nkhata Bay
Day 16 Nkhata Bay
Day 17 Nkhata Bay to Livingstonia
Day 18 Livingstonia – Mbeya
Day 19 Mbeya - Kisaki
Day 20 – Day 21 – Day 22 – Day 23 Safari in Mikumi/Selous
Day 24 reaching Dar and fly to Zanzibar
Day 25/26/27/28/29 stay in Zanzibar
Day 30 back to home

We want to travel with public bus, consider to fly only if we don’t have time. Is that itinerary feasible? And how about the safari in Tanzania? We had some great safari (driving with our car in South Africa) so we don’t want to spend a lot time (and yes….money) in safari in this travel. Will we find cheap guesthouses, bungalow, huts.....everything with a roof on our heads (we don't carry tents) to sleep? Or only expensive places?

And….is it safe to travel by public transport?

Thank you for all the help you can give us,

Have a good trip,

Elisa

P.S. I've posted the same thread on Malawi and Tanzania too.

My experience of hitching and using public transport in Botswana is that it was extremely safe, although at night in the back of a pick up can be hairy if some of the wildlife decides to run across the road
