Welcome to Schouwen-Duiveland
The middle 'finger' of the Delta, this compact island of dunes is a sleepy, sparsely populated area for most of the year but comes to life in high summer, when it is inundated with tourists from the Netherlands and Germany. Drawn by the North Sea beaches and holiday ambience, many of these visitors have vacation properties near the village of Renesse on the island's west coast. The island's main settlement, Zierikzee (pop 11,017), is where most services can be accessed. The streets surrounding its historic Oude Haven (Old Harbour) are home to many historic buildings and are well worth a wander. The VVV website (www.vvvzeeland.nl) is a good resource.
