It's not that long ago that the port areas south of the Nieuwe Maas were no-go zones for most Rotterdammers. These days, the situation couldn't be more different. Since city authorities initiated major programs in the 1980s to redevelop both the docks at Kop van Zuid (South Bank) and the red-light district on the Katendrecht peninsula, this part of town has acquired cutting-edge architecture, a great restaurant and bar scene, boutique hotels and a reputation as one of the city's must-visit neighbourhoods.
