Welcome to Roermond
The principal town of central Limburg, Roermond stands alongside the Maas, here skirted by a string of yacht harbours and artificial lakes outfitted for recreation. Famed as the home town of master architect Pierre Cuypens, WWII and a 1992 earthquake did much damage but the bustling centre retains some older architecture including two ancient if much restored churches, each on its own square with plenty of terrace cafes. Highlights of the 13th-century Munsterkerk are the twin effigies on its central tomb. The light-suffused Sint-Christoffelkathedral has a tower that was painstakingly reconstructed having been blown to smithereens by retreating Germans in the last days of WWII. Roermond also has a gigantic outlet mall.
