Checking flights...

Air

Around 5km northeast of the city, Maastricht-Aachen Airport (www.maa.nl) specialises mainly in cargo flights but also offers a range of mostly charter and holiday flights.

Bus

For Valkenburg buses 8 and 4 (€2.85, 30 minutes) pick up at Boschstraat, Mosae Forum and from the uncovered bus-station area outside the train station on the northwest side. Bus 350 from here drives four times hourly via the US war graves at Margraten (€2.60, 20 minutes) and the celebrated brewery at Gulpen to Aachen (Germany, single/day-return €6/8.50, 65 minutes).

International Buses

For nearby Belgian cities take DeLijn buses from bus station platform D: route 62 runs to Tongeren (45 minutes), route 20a to Hasselt (70 minutes).

Most other longer-distance international buses depart from a small parking area on the east side of the train station accessed by the pedestrian overpass marked for platforms 5 and 6. Booked well ahead, Flixbus (www.flixbus.com) can prove cheaper than the train to several international destinations including Brussels (from €7, 2¼ hours, up to six daily), Paris (from €25, seven hours), Cologne Airport (from €7, 1¾ to 2½ hours, three daily) and Prague (from €33, 12 hours overnight). IC Bus (www.dbicbus.com) operates twice daily to Düsseldorf (90 minutes) with online advance purchase tickets from €9.90.

Car

The city centre is almost entirely pedestrianised but car-park Stadspark, entered beside the hostel, is good value at only €1.40/6 per hour/day. Website www.maastrichtbereikbaar.nl is very helpful with parking and traffic information.

Train

Click your OV-chipkaart on the yellow posts for NS trains including twice-hourly services to Amsterdam (€25.30, 2½ hours), Den Bosch (€20.40, 85 minutes) and Utrecht (€23.90, two hours). Use blue posts for Arriva trains to Valkenburg (€3, 12 minutes) and Roermond (€9.50, 45 minutes).

For Brussels, Paris and Cologne use the hourly Belgian Railways service to Hasselt (95 minutes) and change in Liège (€6.80, 33 minutes). Though planned for many years, construction of the far-faster direct Maastricht–Hasselt fast-tram has yet to begin.
