The annual Oerol outdoor performance festival is revered nationally as a perfect excuse for going to sea. It started years ago with farmers letting their cows run loose one day each year (hence the name oerol, which means 'all over'). It's a wild, arty party, piercing the otherwise unflappable northern facade for 10 days in the latter half of June.

Think theatre, music and street entertainment galore, with stages springing up at impromptu venues all over the island, including on beaches and in sand dunes and pine forests.
