One Day

There's loads to see and do here, so you'll need to get cracking! Start at the Mauritshuis, whose collections include Vermeer's gorgeous Girl With a Pear Earring. After spending a couple of hours admiring this and other works, head to nearby Noordeinde, a vibrant eating, drinking and shopping strip near the Paleis Noordeinde, home to the Dutch royals. After enjoying lunch or a coffee here, move on to the Escher in Het Paleis Museum, stopping to admire the Instagrammable views of the Hofvijver and Binnenhof on your way. Finish the day in the major foodie strip of Denneweg, where there are a host of excellent restaurants and bars in which to eat and drink.

Two Days

On day two, marvel at the artistic achievement of the 19th-century Panorama Mesdag before taking a tram ride to its subject – the beach at Scheveningen. Promenade on the shore or take a quick dip before enjoying a casual lunch in one of the beach cafes. Return to the city centre to do some shopping in De Passage or in the streets around the Paleis Noordeinde before enjoying dinner at De Basiliek and kicking on to the Grote Markt bars or Paard.
