For a great 40km cycling trip along the Maas – with much of the route atop dykes – head northeast out of Den Bosch to Heusden, one of the Netherlands' prettiest small towns. It's surrounded by well-preserved grassy ravelins and moats, and blessed with three windmills, a cafe-dotted square and a charming little harbour. From there, continue to lesser-known but equally lovely Woudrichem, with historic boats in its inner harbour, 17th-century houses on Hoogstraat and a mini-ferry taking pedestrians across to a moated castle on request. From just outside Woudrichem's city wall, a slightly bigger ferry carries cyclists across the river to Gorinchem, where you can put the bike on the return train to Den Bosch (one hour including a change in Geldermalsen).
