Baan Unrak runs this charity caring for around 150 orphaned or abandoned children, including young Mon and Karen people. Volunteers (particularly English teachers, but officework and other skills are helpful as well) are always welcome. Accommodation and food are provided for those staying six months or longer; for shorter periods helpers are asked to donate US$150 per week (to a maximum US$900) for expenses.
Many of the children at Baan Unrak come from families who fled persecution in neighbouring Myanmar, while others were born in border areas and lack identity papers. As well as running the children's home, Baan Unrak helps single mothers, does medical outreach, has an animal shelter and runs a bakery and souvenir shop to provide an income for local women.
