Cruel elephant rides remain tragically common in central Thailand, but Elephant Haven, a satellite of Chiang Mai's renowned Elephant Nature Park, offers a gentler, educational alternative. Visitors can observe elephants up close, feed them tasty rice and millet balls, and listen to the echoing crunch as they devour greenery. Staff treat these gentle beasts with affection and care, and elephants – most of them rescued or retired from elephant riding outfits – can enjoy their natural stamping grounds of forest and river.
