Until its destruction by the Burmese in 1767, Ayuthaya was the seat of one of ancient Thailand's most powerful kingdoms. Today, the former capital's ruins form this park, one of Thailand's must-see destinations.
The sites are separated into two districts. Ruins ‘on the island’, in the central part of town west of Th Chee Kun, are easily toured by bicycle or motorbike. Those ‘off the island’, opposite the river from the centre, are best visited on an evening boat tour.
The Ayutthaya Tourist Center offers an interesting primer on local history, along with informative pamphlets on the temples.
