Wildlife watching on foot, on horseback and in traditional 4WD vehicles are all options, as are cultural encounters with local Maasai.

Wildlife Drives

Wildlife drives out here sometimes stray into Kenya (shh…), but elephant sightings are pretty reliable. Elephants, zebras, cheetahs, warthogs and lesser kudus are either resident or pass through on a regular basis, while lions and buffaloes are rare but increasing. Night drives are also possible.

Walking Safaris

Walking safaris are on offer – most are day hikes, but multi-day expeditions using fly camps can also be arranged.

Horseback Safaris

Makoa Farm in Machame runs eight- to 10-day horse-riding safaris that take in the West Kilimanjaro area.

Cultural Encounters

Cultural encounters at local Maasai manyattas are an essential part of the West Kilimanjaro experience.
