Diving & Snorkelling

Mafia offers divers fine corals, a variety of fish, including numerous pelagics, and relaxing, uncrowded diving, usually done from motorised dhows. You can dive year-round in Chole Bay at various sites for all levels, plus there is seasonal diving (October to February) outside the bay for experienced divers. The best month is generally October, and the least favourable months are April, May and early June, when everything shuts down due to the rains. Diver operators include Big Blu, Mafia Island Diving and the in-house dive instructors at Shamba Kilole Eco Lodge.

Long popular in deep-sea fishing circles, Mafia is known especially for its marlin, sailfish, tuna and other big-game fish. Conditions are best between September and March, with June and July the least-appealing months due to strong winds. Contact Big Blu or Kinasi Lodge. Licences can be arranged through Mafia Island Marine Park Headquarters in Utende.
