Getting There & Away
Kilwa Kivinje is reached by heading about 25km north of Kilwa Masoko (or 5km south of Nangurukuru junction on the main Dar es Salaam–Mtwara road) along a sealed road to the signposted access road. Follow this unpaved track for about 5km further, past Kinyonga Hospital, to Kilwa Kivinje.
Shared taxis travel several times daily to and from Kilwa Masoko (Tsh2000). Buses between Dar es Salaam and Kilwa Masoko also usually stop at Kilwa Kivinje. Chartering a private taxi from Kilwa Masoko will cost Tsh25,000 to Tsh30,000 return.
Kilwa Kivinje is an important regional dhow port. There are regular sailings from the colourful dhow port on the edge of town to Songo Songo (about Tsh2000, three to five hours; motorised boat Tsh7000 to Tsh10,000, two hours), from where it is easy to reach nearby Fanjove island. Departures for the motorised boats are usually from about 10am. For Mafia, take a bus up the coast towards Dar es Salaam and get a boat at Nyamisati.
