Getting There & Away
Kulob marks the last town on the relatively flat plains that lie south of Dushanbe. From here, the road (A385) winds up to the checkpoint at the relatively modest Shurabad Pass (1600m), where GBAO permits are carefully scrutinised.
Construction and rock fall after the pass can have serious implications on the timing of a journey with delays of three hours or more an almost daily occurrence at the time of writing.
It is hard to find transport in and out of Kulob without speaking Russian or Farsi. Most people arrive here in Dushanbe–Khorog transport or chartered 4WDs.
