Getting Around

The access road to Haft-Kul is currently very rough but daily shared 4WDs battle their way from the A377 to the village of Shing (42km from Penjikent); meaning 'green orchard' in the ancient language of Sogd, the village lives up to its name. Beyond Shing the road is prone to mudslides, especially in spring, which can block the route for days. Nofin (60km from Penjikent) is accessed from the fourth of the seven lakes and thereafter the road becomes a cliff-hugging track. Interestingly the sixth lake dries up in winter and is used as a horseback ground for buzkashi, Tajikistan's form of polo.
