Before You Go

Health Insurance

Some policies pay doctors or hospitals directly rather than you having to pay on the spot and claim later. If you have to claim later, make sure you keep all documentation. You may be asked to call (reverse charges) a centre in your home country for an immediate assessment of your problem.

Recommended Vaccinations

  • A yellow fever vaccination is required for all travellers arriving from a yellow-fever-infected area in Africa or the Americas.
  • Hepatitis A and B vaccinations are recommended.

In Taipei

Tap Water

Taipei's tap water is supposed to be drinkable, but nobody does. Boiling it first should do the trick or buy bottled water. A more environmental and practical solution is to carry your own flask. There are drinking water dispensers in major tourist sites, temples, some MRT stations and hospitals.

Medical Services

Almost every hospital in Taipei has English speakers on staff. Even if you don't have local insurance, rates are still very cheap compared to the West. Once you've registered with a hospital, subsequent appointments can be made online. Many of the big hospitals have volunteer desks staffed by retirees. They will help you fill out forms and locate where you have to go.
