Getting There & Away
Ticino’s nearest international airport is Milan Malpensa, 80km south of Lugano, which is served by a raft of airlines including budget ones like Ryanair and easyJet. There are regular airport buses to Lugano (Sfr25, 70 minutes) and Bellinzona (Sfr40, two hours). The opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel in late 2016 has also sped things up between Bellinzona and Zürich Airport (Sfr64, two hours), making this also a viable option. Trains between Bellinzona and Zurich also stop en route in Lucerne (Sfr54, 1½ hours).
The A2 motorway links Como in the south of the canton to the Gotthard Tunnel in the north; the latter is notorious for traffic jams, so check www.gotthard-strassentunnel.ch before heading out. Helter-skelter pass roads link Ticino to the rest of Switzerland, including the San Bernadino Pass to Graubünden, the St Gotthard Pass to Central Switzerland and the Nufenenpass to Valais.
