Forget horseback riding; the latest craze to sweep this corner of Switzerland is cow trekking – yes, really. It’s all thanks to the madcap brainwave of local farmer Heinz Morgenegg, who runs the Bolderhof in Hemishofen, 3km west of Stein am Rhein. Cow trekking is part of the Morgenegg family’s experiential approach to organic dairy farming.
Simply pick your brown-eyed beauty, saddle up and ride at cow pace through bucolic countryside to the banks of the Rhine. The cows can sense a soft touch and have been known to suddenly make a sprint for the freedom of a meadow full of luscious grass, so a firm hand (and riding crop) is needed.
