Getting There & Away
Interlaken has two train stations: Interlaken West and Interlaken Ost; each has bikes for rent, money-changing facilities and an adjacent ferry landing stage for boats headed for Lake Thun and Lake Brienz.
Trains to Lucerne (Sfr33, 1¾ to two hours), Brig (Sfr46, 1¼ hours) and Montreux (Sfr74, 2¼ to 2¾ hours, via Spiez/Visp or Bern/Lausanne) depart frequently from Interlaken Ost train station.
Many trains up to mountain resorts begin in Lauterbrunnen (Sfr7.60, 20 minutes).
The A8 motorway heads northeast to Lucerne and the A6 northwest to Bern, but the only way south for vehicles without a big detour round the mountains is to take the car-carrying train from Kandersteg, south of Spiez.
Should you wish to hire a car in Interlaken for trips further into Switzerland, big-name rental companies, including Hertz, are reasonably central.
