Suriname's best activity is experiencing nature and indigenous cultures in the interior. Bird-watching and other wildlife-spotting adventures are once-in-a-lifetime experiences, and boating and trekking opportunities are abundant. The accessible Maroon cultures are unique, and most trips to the interior will involve visits to Maroon villages.

Suriname has plenty of good hiking opportunities, but given the terrain and total lack of infrastructure outside Paramaribo, most hikers will want to hire a guide when graduating from simple trails to anything more challenging. Some of the routes can be tough indeed, especially given the heat and sun. The best places to hike are in the Brownsberg Nature Reserve, where you can climb the mountain and trek to various secluded waterfalls. Nearly all travel agencies in Paramaribo offer hiking trips in Brownsberg and beyond.
