North of Trinco, the indented coastline is blessed with fine beaches. Development is limited to two villages at the moment: the pretty, palm-lined sands of Uppuveli just north of Trinco, and the more expansive, more isolated beach of Nilaveli. The ambience is mellow at both places, but Uppuveli has a fun travellers' scene and a strip of good places to eat.
The ocean and beaches are the main attraction: there's some surf, and the snorkelling and scuba diving around Pigeon Island (a pretty island ringed by coral reef just offshore from Nilaveli) are superb. This is a poor region of fishing communities that was hit hard by the war and the 2004 tsunami. Now, though, all eyes are on the future, and the seemingly limitless beaches to the north mean that changes and development will be the order of the day in coming years.
