Getting There & Away

Government, private and intercity express buses run between Negombo bus station and Saunders Pl, Colombo (regular/air-con Rs 57/100, two hours, every 20 minutes). A faster air-con bus goes via the new highway (Rs 120, one hour) until 8pm. Long queues form at the bus station on weekend evenings, when day trippers return to the capital.

There are nine trains a day to Colombo (2nd/3rd class Rs 70/40, two hours), but they’re slower and less frequent than the buses.

For Kandy, buses run four times a day until 3.30pm (Rs 150); the journey takes around three hours.

Bus 240 for Bandaranaike International Airport (Rs 24, 40 minutes), leaves from the bus station in town every 15 minutes between about 6am and 7pm. A three-wheeler costs about Rs 500 from Negombo town or Rs 900 from Lewis Pl. A taxi costs double this.

From the airport, find a taxi at an office just outside the terminal or catch a three-wheeler on the main road just outside the airport. Hotels can also arrange transport. The journey takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
