The Central Basque Coast in One Day
Rise early for a visit to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, a dramatic island linked to the mainland by a narrow pedestrian causeway – perhaps the most photogenic place on the coast. After getting some exercise on the long walk, continue to Bermeo for snacks and drinks at one of the pleasant terrace cafes along the waterfront. Take a stroll through the old town, then catch the ferry out to Playa de Laida for a bit of downtime on a lovely beach.
Around lunchtime, find your way to Lekeitio and go straight to Mesón Arropain, serving up some of the best seafood in the region. Assuming the tide is low, walk off your lunch by strolling out to the Isla de San Nicolás, offering a jaw-dropping view over the seaside. If the tide is high, spend the afternoon wandering the old town or checking out the Faro de Santa Catalina just north of town.
With the sun still overhead, continue to Getaria, a tiny cobblestone village with plenty of charm. If time allows, visit the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museoa. Afterwards have a sunset cocktail on the waterfront, then finish with an outstanding dinner at either Elkano or Txoko Getaria.
