This colourful 10-day festival brings castells (human 'castles') to Tarragona's centre. Teams of castellers stand on each other’s shoulders to build towers up to nine levels high, topped by a death-defying child. Watch the spectacle along Rambla Nova or Plaça de la Font, and stick around for the fireworks.
The sport of creating castells originated in Valls, 20km north of Tarragona, in the 18th century. The tradition spread to other parts of Catalonia, but Tarragona’s Festival de Santa Tecla is renowned for having the most spectacular displays.
