Iglesia-Fortaleza de Santa María de Ujué

Navarra

Standing at the highest point in the village, this church of mixed Romanesque-Gothic style was completed in 1094. Aside from magnificent views over the valley from its outer walkways, the church contains the heart of Carlos II, and a rare statue of the Black Virgin, which is said to have been discovered by a shepherd who was led to the statue by a dove.
