Once a centre of kingly power, now a quietly grand stone settlement mounting a prominence in the central Mallorcan plain, Sineu is one of the most engaging of the island’s inland towns. It’s also one of the oldest – a local legend traces the town’s origins back to Roman Sinium, while the link to the Islamic settlement of Sixneu is less tenuous. Less ambiguous is the antiquity of its two traditional rural fairs, one weekly, one annual, both dating to the early 14th century.
