This private tour consists of driving the first stage of the St. James’ Way pilgrimage route (aka El Camino) from the medieval village of St-Jean-Pied-de-Port, France, to Roncesvalles in Spain. After hotel pickup in San Sebastian, the first part of your private tour takes your through the initial stages of this historic pilgrimage located between the Pyrenees and the Iberian Peninsula. Start in St-Jean-Pied-du-Port, a village in the French Pyrenees that dates back to the 12th century as a commercial, military, and religious crossroads. Churches, two historical bridges, and a pristine river add to the city’s medieval atmosphere.Continue along El Camino for another 15 miles (25 km) to Roncesvalles, located at the top of a valley. Once you arrive, take your time to enjoy the views from the mountain peak. The former hospital at Roncesvalles houses a museum, where a guide tells you more about the history of the pilgrimage.To finish, visit one Europe's largest and oldest forests, Irati, the second-biggest wooded preserve after Germany's Black Forest. Take a walk with your guide through the endless groves of beech trees, catching occasional glimpses of the Pyrenees, from where you've just descended. Your tour then ends with return to San Sebastian for drop-off.
