La Palma in

One Day

Drive from Santa Cruz to the Los Tiles biosphere reserve and hike out under the shadows of giant trees. Drive the short distance to San Andrés for an Asian-inspired lunch at La Placita and a stroll around the pretty cobbled streets. Drive towards Barlovento but veer off down the steep hillside cloaked in banana plants to the soaring cliffs around the Piscinas de la Fajana and the La Gaviota restaurant for a sunset meal at the end of the day.

Two Days

Start your day exploring the picturesque streets of Santa Cruz then drive south for a superb seafood lunch under the roar of aeroplanes at Casa Goyo. Continue on via quaint Villa de Mazo to the barren, volcanic terrain around Fuencaliente to walk around part of the rim of Volcán San Antonio. If time allows, hike south to the tip of the island and the Salinas de Fuencaliente. Otherwise push on up the west coast to the seaside resort of Puerto Naos and your night stop.

Three Days

From Puerto Naos, take the winding road upward to the Parque Nacional de la Caldera de Taburiente; lace up your boots for a half-day hike. If you’ve time, the 2½-hour clamber up to Pico Bejenado is well worthwhile. Restore calories by driving the short hop to El Paso for some excellent food at Tapas Trekking.
